By faith, we leave a legacy
—for our loved ones and yours

“Just don’t put me in a home.” If you’ve heard that from a parent, you’re not alone—not by a long shot.

No matter how dependent they are, seniors want to age in the comforts of their own homes. But if you don’t have the time to help them, it can feel like you’re compromising their safety and your peace of mind.

And that’s not the only path. Instead, you can lean on caregivers that feel like an extension of your family. You can rely on caregivers you trust and understand how cherished your loved ones are. When my husband and I started this business, that’s what we set out to do. To hire compassionate caregivers who feel as called to this work as we do.

Here’s our story of how we were called.

By faith, I answered the call...

I became aware of the great need for home care when I faced the reality of my parents’ need for it.

It was in the Fall of 2009. I faced a choice to continue on my path in Public Relations in New York City or return home to help my aging parents down in Florida.

It was an easy choice—especially when I saw how their health was declining. They were no longer the strong, hard-working parents I knew growing up. I knew that I had to take the leap of faith to move away from the career path I was on to go and help them.

They required more of me as the years passed. And as my husband and I welcomed our first son in 2013, my parents’ needs became almost overwhelming. I’d feel guilty for prioritizing my growing family over my parents. And I’d feel guilty when I dropped the ball for what my parents needed.

I felt totally stuck, and I was on the fast path to burnout.

It took me two more years before I finally realized I couldn’t do it alone. And when I brought in caregivers, I couldn’t believe how my load lightened.

I discovered a new joy and relief at having trusted help. I finally had the breathing room to take care of myself. I wouldn’t have to worry about Mom falling or going missing. I wouldn’t have to worry about Dad missing his insulin. I could prioritize my family because I knew my parents were in good hands. Knowing that I had a team helping me—that someone else had their backs (and mine) was everything to me.

A legacy of care

That was when I realized there was a path ahead where I could honor my parents’ legacy. But not just their legacy.

Caring for my parents changed my priorities. I wanted to give more back to my community—not just as a leader in my church as I already did, but through my life’s work.

I saw a path to help and honor elders throughout my community. Where I could give the gift of care to the elders in my community and create something to honor them and their lives.

That’s when I realized that Wisdom Senior Care was the business that could empower me to do that.

For me , it's a feeling

My eyes were welling up as I saw the young woman walk up to receive her award and grant for Outstanding Caregiver at Wisdom’s Annual Celebration.

I could see the pride and appreciation in her eyes. And it was apparent that everyone in the room shared that feeling. That’s when I knew I had found the right partner for bringing home care to the seniors of the Greater Fort Lauderdale area. I could feel it: the love, the compassion, and the care.

You can tell a company's real values by how they treat their employees. With Wisdom Senior Care, I could feel mutual respect to and from the top. And the more I learned about the leadership at Wisdom, the clearer it became that my values were theirs. Both CEO Carolyn Thurston and COO husband Charles Thurston feel called to serve the way my husband and I do.

Like us, they are motivated by their faith and led by compassion

And like us, they know it’s about finding the right people and keeping them. It’s about investing in each caregiver, from the training to the culture of respect. They require far more training than the other organizations we vetted. They foster a culture that draws and keeps the most dedicated and compassionate people for this work.

They put hiring the right people as caregivers first.

Because, like us, they know the work we do is about the people.

We knew these were the partners who would support our mission.

And we bring that mission of faith, love, and compassion to you and your loved ones.
