Our History

I had the opportunity to travel the world with my family as my father was in the United States Air Force. We had the chance to experience many cultures, learned the values of discipline, determination, and persistence. What stood out to me though was the way non-American cultures treated their seniors loved ones. I feel this assisted in my love for the senior population.

At that young age, my passion for seniors' care developed and I would find myself airing around to help seniors and learn from their wisdom. I developed a desire to support seniors with the realization that aging should not mean fatality.

Seniors life is not over, they can and are a value to the next generation, I sensed at a young age that people with limited mobility should have the ability to stay in their homes or with their family and not feel they have to be placed somewhere and forgotten.

I became shy having to be the new person in the class every year. I started going to the library to find self-help books to improve myself.  This process helped me to continue to have faith in myself when others did not or when my high school counselor asked me what did I want to do after graduating and I told her I wanted to be a nurse she said No You don’t have the grades for that you should be a secretary.  I told her no I would be a Nurse. At age 16, I remember sharing with my mother that I wanted to open a daycare for the elderly so that adult children could go to work and assure their loved one was in a safe place, socializing. I shared with my mother the name of the daycare would be Wisdom, She encouraged me, and I will never forget her statement, You can do that.

I completed High School at Lakenheath England and then came back to the United States to start the journey of becoming a Registered Nurse, in this process I learned that we could have plans but life may take us another way to get to the result.  I was introduced to an ecommerce business that helped me to develop personally and professionally. I received my BA degree from North Carolina Central University and my BSN degree from Winston Salem state university.   After graduating from College with my nursing degree, passing the nursing boards and starting a new job and getting married all in the same month occurred just the beginning of how I like to do many things at one time. I knew I wanted to work in the home health industry. I completed a year in a hospital setting on a medical-surgical floor. I Had my First Daughter Jasmine and then came a decision that I had to make if I should stay home or go back to work, this was a struggle for me until I prayed and my direction was made clear.  The opportunity to work with Liberty Home Health company as the Director of office operations for nine years During this time my 2nd Daughter Moriah was born.

At Wisdom

WE UNDERSTAND CAREGIVING

Since 2006, we have helped thousands of seniors residents live happily in the comfort of their homes with compassionate care. Over those years, clients have been expressing their gratitude toward the care we provide.

The quality of care allowed us to build strategic partnership with continuing care retirement communities such like Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill. For many years, residents we serve in those communities have been pleased to work with us. And we have been selected as part of their preferred agency in Durham to work with. We are always in the look for compassionate caregivers to maintain the level of service quality. Our rigorous hiring process allows us to find and invest in compassionate caregivers.

Our caring even expands to hospice cases where we provide personal care that give hope to our clients in hospice. And we are not surprise to see some of our clients live longer than the time to live given to them initially. That, fulfills us.

OUR PATH TO WISDOM SENIOR CARE

My strong desire to start my own business was my spiritual weapon against the fear, the doubt of the unknown. I step out of the comfort zone with faith in myself and the opportunity to be able to help more people. With no clarity on how the journey will be, one Sunday night December of 2005 I took a step toward that dream.  I completed an application to start a home care business and in 2006 Wisdom Senior Care (Initially Wisdom Health Solutions) was born.

I was introduced to the home care industry where I knew I had found my passion and the opportunity to develop Wisdom. And my faith in myself, my team of caregivers and staff kept my energy. My husband Charles Thurston, Dorothy Walker and Patricia Miller were a tremendous support in this journey. Compassionate Dorothy, Patricia went from not knowing the industry to being today key players in our Durham office. That is all what it takes to grow a career with Wisdom.

The start of Wisdom was great I had found my area and clients were no problem finding. I had one missing ingredient, and that was a team to support and assist with the growth of the vision.  After many years of trial and error and having to learn the hard way I was able to start the process of finding others who wanted to be part of the vision.

I have always had the foresight to see where there is a problem there is a solution, I was still coming up with business ideas like the development of Wisdom health academy which grew out of a need of not finding Certified Nursing Assistants.  We started to explore what we could do to assure all our caregivers were well trained. It was what established Wisdom Health Academy.

2009 I had the opportunity to become one of three persons to teach the one-day state-mandated home care provider course for the state of North Carolina for anyone who has never owned or operated a home care agency.  That gave me the opportunity to assist over 200 potential business owners get started, but I would have a large percentage calling back needing additional support

THE EXPERIENCE WITH WISDOM

After about 10 years of trials and errors running the agency, we knew as a team that something needed to change for us to discover fulfillment in the mission we choose. As the leader of this mission, 2016 was a significant turning point for my life, including the business.  I had reached a point where I was physically and mentally tired and wanted to change directions. God allowed me to meet the Co-Founder of wEquipu, Christopher McMullan, who started the process of changing my mindset from an entrepreneur to a business owner.  A book that he recommended I read was The EMyth which he stated I would see myself in the first few pages and I did, at first I was mad, but I continued to read, and my mind shifted.

The mentorship and business development coaching received helped me personally and my whole team. We got the opportunity to understand the pieces that were missing in the journey. We clarify our business model foundations and strengthened our marketing efforts for market domination. The ongoing support is helping us in our continual quest for growth. Our choice to grow a solid organization from within led us to find more talents in our caregivers for strategic career growth.

In 2016 I developed wisdom business owners to be able to assist like-minded business owners in the pursuit of their vision. Alongside each other, we creating a community of business owners who can leveraged on our ways building Wisdom Senior Care.

Today, from the model developed here in Durham we are on our way to build a successful Wisdom Senior Care family of home care business owners. We know that we will be able to increase our capacity to help many seniors, individuals in need of help in their daily activities live happy in the comfort of their homes.

We are appreciative of the opportunity to serve the communities and add tremendous value to our aging population with our services.
